Is the electoral college the best way to decide who becomes president?

"The electoral college plays the central role in electing the President of the United States in the sense that when we vote for President of the United States it’s not that the votes are just counted and whoever wins the election wins the job, as say, when we elect members of congress," Anibal Perez-Linan, Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at Notre Dame said.
