by Julie Hail Flory

First-year students at the University of Notre Dame are, as a whole, more interested in politics than their peers at other colleges and universities across the country, according to an annual survey of college freshmen conducted by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA.p. Fifty percent of Notre Dame’s class of 2006 indicated in the survey that they consider following politics ?essential? or ?very important,? compared with 33 percent of students at other institutions. The national figure is up nearly 2 percent from last year and Notre Dame is leading the trend, showing an increase of nearly 3 percent over the last five years.p.
