2012 Military Friendly School

The University of Notre Dame’s MBA program at the Mendoza College of Business has been named as a “2012 Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools – 1,518 out of more than 8,000 surveyed – that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

“In addition to being very pleased to assist those who have served our country so well, we have found that military service is excellent preparation for MBA study and business careers,” said Edward J. Conlon, associate dean of graduate studies at the Mendoza College.

In its effort to help student veterans find the right school, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans for the first time. This feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students. Student veteran survey feedback can be viewed by clicking here.

“The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience,” said Michael Dakduk, executive director for the Student Veterans of America. “Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans.”

Service members and veterans can also meet individual student veterans from the various schools virtually on the site to learn more about personal school decisions and the transition from the military to an academic environment. Schools on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

Notre Dame has a long history of supporting the United States Armed Forces, dating back as far as 1858 with the Notre Dame Continental Cadets, a company composed of Notre Dame students. In September 1941, three months prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps became the University’s first ROTC detachment. An estimated 12,000 officers completed their training at Notre Dame between 1942 and 1946.

The University participates in the GI Bill known as the Yellow Ribbon Program. The legislation enacted by Congress authorized significant benefits to eligible U.S. military veterans with honorable discharges who served on active duty after Sept. 11, 2001, for at least 36 months.

“We remain dedicated in our commitment to serve those who have served our great country so valiantly,” said Brian Lohr, Notre Dame MBA admissions director. “Our $15,000 fellowship match of the Yellow Ribbon Program is just one aspect of a much broader and comprehensive program to ensure our veterans are well positioned for the future.”

The 2012 list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. A full list of board members and additional information can be found on the guide’s website here.
