by Dennis Brown

The spire on the southwest corner of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame was blown to the ground and a small stained-glass window at the back of the church was damaged by high, straight-line winds that hit theSouth Bendarea late Tuesday afternoon (May 15).

No injuries were caused by the winds, which also damaged trees on the Main Quad, behind the Basilica and in other areas on campus.

There is no evidence that a tornado touched down on University property, according to Notre Dame officials who were on campus when the storm hit.

The cost of the damage is unknown at this time.
