The Center for History will celebrate and honor the University of Notre Dame on the occasion of the University’s 170th year at the center’s annual dinner, to be held Sept. 26 (Wednesday) at the Historic Oliver Gardens of Copshaholm in South Bend.
The event, which will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m., is being held in celebration of Notre Dame’s vision, leadership and community engagement, reflecting the University’s faith-based core values since its establishment in 1842.
“Father Sorin’s vision was to build a great university whose graduates would go forth and do good,” said a statement issued by The Center for History. “In the 170 years since, priests from the Congregation of Holy Cross have expanded upon his original bold vision. Their successive leadership has continued advancing the University to its place among the outstanding institutions of higher learning in the country and the world.”
The annual dinner is The Center for History’s main fundraising event of the year. The funds raised are used to further the museum’s exhibits and programs. The second oldest historical society in Indiana, the Northern Indiana Historical Society, which owns and operates The Center for History, was organized in 1867 as a private, nonprofit institution. The mission of The Center for History is to collect, preserve, interpret, exhibit and teach the heritage of the St. Joseph River Valley Region to enrich present and future generations. The Center for History comprises the Oliver Mansion, the Worker’s Home, Voyages Gallery, the Ernestine M. Raclin Gallery of Notre Dame History, and Kidsfirst Children’s Museum. It serves as the national repository for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The Center for History, along with Studebaker National Museum, is part of The Museums at Washington and Chapin.
