An examination of the ethical issues involved in the recent financial meltdown will launch the University of Notre Dame’s Berges Lecture Series in Business Ethics on Wednesday (Sept. 9) with a panel discussion titled “The Ethical Implications of the Recent Financial Crisis.”
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. in the Jordan Auditorium in Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. It will be moderated by Patrick E. Murphy, professor of marketing and co-director of the Institute for Ethical Business Worldwide, and will feature Rev. Oliver Williams, C.S.C., associate professor of management and director of the Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business; Jerry Langley, professional specialist in the Department of Finance; and John Russell, a former executive at Wall Street investment firm Salomon Brothers.
Subsequent lectures in the series will discuss topics such as ethical business leadership, corporate responsibility and personal values in the workplace.
The remainder of the series, with all lectures scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. in the Jordan Auditorium, is as follows:
• Sept. 23: John E. Rooney, chief executive officer, U.S. Cellular, “The Importance of Ethical Leadership”
• Sept. 30: Neville Isdell, chairman, Coca-Cola Co., “Corporate Responsibility of Multinational Corporations”
• Nov. 2: Barbara Porter, vice president of business development and sales, Nicor National, “Instilling Ethical Principles into an Organization”
• Nov. 17: David Langstaff, former CEO, Veridian Corp. and chairman, Wildheart Group, “The Key to Business Happiness: Aligning Personal and Professional Values”
