Jorge A. Bustamante, Eugene Conley Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame, will be the featured speaker at noon Oct. 27 (Wednesday) for the Institute for Latino StudiesFaculty Seminar Series lecture in Room 208 McKenna Hallp. TitledCommentaries on Recent Immigration Policies,the lecture is free and open to the publicp. Bustamante, who received his doctoral degree from Notre Dame in 1975, is a leading international scholar of Mexican migration to the United States. He has played a major role in building and sustaining scholarly links between Mexico and the United States as founder of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (College of the Northern Border), the prominent Mexican institute for the study of border issues.p. Bustamante is the author of numerous studies on the sociology of the border region between the United States and Mexico and on Mexican-origin residents of the United States. He has received the highest award granted to scientists by the Mexican government, the Premio Nacional de Ciencias. In January 2001, Bustamante was appointed to the advisory group on immigration and population policies by Mexicos Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
