History professor Bernard Norling dies at age 79

Word has been received of the death of Bernard P. Norling, professor emeritus of history at the University of Notre Dame. He died Sept. 17 after a short illness at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He was 79.p. Appointed to the Notre Dame faculty in 1952, Norling specialized in military history and the history of medicine. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from Notre Dame and was the author or co-author of 10 books, including ?Timeless Problems in History," a textbook widely used at colleges and universities nationwide. In recent years he published a series of books on guerilla warfare in the Philippines during World War II.p. Norling earned his bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Notre Dame. He was a member of the American Historical Association and other professional organizations.p. Norling was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. He is survived by a sister, a sister-in-law, and 20 nieces and nephews.p. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday (Sept. 22) at Notre Dame’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and burial was at Cedar Grove Cemetery on campus.
