Mike Seamon, associate vice president for campus safety at the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed the University’s first vice president for campus safety and event management, Executive Vice President John Affleck-Graves announced Friday (April 29).

In the newly created position, Seamon will continue to lead Notre Dame Security Police, the Notre Dame Fire Department, the Risk Management and Safety Department and football Game Day Operations and emergency management, and he will take on oversight of the multiple components associated with event space on campus.

“From his days as a student at Notre Dame to roles with ever-increasing responsibility over the past 19 years, Mike has demonstrated superb organizational skills, an aptitude for anticipating challenges and the ability to work effectively with all members of the campus community,” Affleck-Graves said. “He is ideally suited to address what is a growing and critical need on campus, and I am pleased that he has accepted this new assignment.”

Said Seamon: “I am extremely grateful to Father John (Jenkins) and John Affleck-Graves for this opportunity to continue to serve the University in this new capacity. I’m excited and look forward to collaborating with the campus community, our alumni, guests and the broader region, particularly as the Campus Crossroads Project comes to life in 2017.”

Approximately 75 venues in 30 buildings are currently used for various events on campus, yet there is no centralized mechanism for booking, assigning space, coordinating setup, providing technology or other resources. The opening next year of several more such facilities in the Campus Crossroad Project surrounding Notre Dame Stadium will compound the problem.

Seamon has been charged with unifying the process associated with management of major events for all faculty, staff, students and outside groups that are planning and hosting conferences and other gatherings on campus. In addition, he will play an active role in the coordination of major institutional events, such as commencement, alumni reunion weekend, football game day operations, Junior Parents Weekend and University milestone celebrations.

A graduate of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in management and a master of business administration degree, Seamon has served at his alma mater since 1997 after previously working as director of sales and marketing for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball.

Prior to his current position, Seamon was assistant vice president for university events, executive assistant to the executive vice president — for both Affleck-Graves and Rev. Timothy Scully, C.S.C. — and executive assistant to the vice president of finance and the vice president of business operations.

Seamon is a graduate of the South Bend/Mishawaka Leadership Program and has served as chair of the Logan Center’s Foundation Board of Trustees and on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County.
