Student donations support local charities and families at 11th annual Old2Gold June 13

It’s the bane of their existence for many parents of college students – the year-end ritual of packing up the dorm room and moving belongings. At Notre Dame, students can help the local community while avoiding the headaches and backaches of moving day.

For the 11th year, the University of Notre Dame will hold the Old2Gold sale, a “yard sale” of student donations that supports local charitable organizations. Old2Gold will take place on June 13 (Saturday) at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds, 5117 Ironwood Road, South Bend. Typically held at Notre Dame Stadium, Old2Gold will take place at the fairgrounds this year due to construction surrounding the stadium.

All proceeds from the sale are donated to local non-profit organizations whose volunteers help to manage the logistics of the sale.

According to Marty Ogren, associate director of warehousing, delivery and transportation, the sale is a winning combination for all involved. “Old2Gold is a great partnership between Notre Dame and community. Students and their families donate items knowing that they’re supporting good causes. Local residents get great bargains on bicycles, refrigerators, furniture, clothing and more, while local organizations share the money raised from the sale.”

In 2014, $33,396 was distributed to 28 local community service agencies.

Old2Gold is also one of the University’s most significant sustainability efforts. Each year, thousands of pounds of donations which are sold at the sale avoid being discarded at the landfill.

This year’s sale will feature free parking at the Fairgrounds. The parking lot will open at 4 a.m. on the day of the sale. Overnight parking is not available in the Fairgrounds parking lots, and attendees are discouraged from parking on nearby streets before the parking lot opens.

Admission fee to the sale is $5 per person. Children 6 and under are admitted free. Ticket sales begin at 6 a.m. The sale runs from 7 to 10 a.m., and is a cash-only sale.
