Five books published this year by the University of Notre Dame Press have received 2014 Book Awards from the Catholic Press Association.
The awards, one of them given to a book edited by Notre Dame theologians, were announced during the association’s annual June meeting in Charlotte, N.C.
“Icons of Hope: The ‘Last Things’ in Catholic Imagination,” by John E. Thiel, received the first-place award in the theology category; “Prophets of the Posthuman: American Fiction, Biotechnology, and the Ethics of Personhood,” by Christina Bieber, received the first-place award in the faith and science category; “A Defense of Dignity: Creating Life, Destroying Life, and Protecting the Rights of Conscience,” by Christopher Kaczor, received the second-place award in the faith and science category; “The Preferential Option for the Poor beyond Theology,” edited by Rev. Daniel G. Groody, C.S.C., associate professor of theology at Notre Dame, and Rev. Gustavo Gutierrez, O.P., John Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Theology at Notre Dame, received the second-place award in the social teaching category; and “Catholic Progressives in England after Vatican II,” by Jay P. Corrin, received the third-place award in the history category.
The largest Catholic university press in the world, the University of Notre Dame Press celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. Established in 1949, it annually publishes some 50 titles, including academic works, poetry, fiction and books of general interest.
