Campus Fire

Emergency crews have extinguished a fire in a utility tunnel on the University of Notre Dame campus. The fire was discovered this morning and led to the evacuation of the LaFortune Student Center and several nearby buildings.

One employee was treated for smoke inhalation and has been released from the hospital.

The extent of damage caused by the fire is unknown at this time. The cause remains under investigation.

Classes have not been canceled.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors are asked to continue to stay away from the area while emergency personnel remain on the scene. The North Dining Hall is open to anyone who has been displaced from an evacuated building.

The incident has interrupted Internet, telephone and cable television service in several areas of campus. The Office of Information Technologies is evaluating the outages and working to restore services.
