Chawla is a prolific researcher, innovator and educator in data science and network science. He is passionate about innovating for the common good, and his research is bridging disciplinary boundaries for transformative applications in health care analytics, learning analytics, environmental sciences and national security. He is the director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Network Science and Applications (iCeNSA), which is a University research center connecting faculty and research expertise across departments/colleges, industry collaborators, federal agencies, national labs and community partners. He also directs the Data Inference Analytics and Learning Lab (DIAL). He is the recipient of multiple awards for research and teaching innovation including outstanding teacher awards (2007 and 2010), National Academy of Engineers New Faculty Fellowship and a number of best paper awards and nominations. He received the IBM Watson Faculty Award in 2012, the IBM Big Data Award in 2013 and the IEEE CIS Early Career Award in 2015. He is a Fellow of the Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values, Fellow of the Liu Institute of Asia and Asian Studies, and Fellow of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. He is the founder of data science start-up Aunalytics.
