Areas of Expertise
Conservation biology, population ecology, global climate change
Hellmann is studying the diversity of ways that local and regional climatic effects are altering species and ecosystems. Frequently, she uses butterflies and their grassland communities to understand the effects of climate change on nature. Because detailed climate study in every ecological system would be a daunting task, her research compares two butterfly species in western North America with the goal of predicting differential climatic affects on species with differing ecologies and traits. Hellmann also was a member of the Chicago Climate Task Force which has recommended steps that the city can take to reach Mayor Richard Daley’s goal of reducing its emissions of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, by 25 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.
